I've been thinking about this question since my retail days, and I still get asked it constantly: What should I actually buy? Not the full collection. Not the "everything you could ever need." Just the stuff that works, every day, under pressure.
So here it is. Not a fantasy routine. Not a sponsored list. The actual makeup bag I'd hand to any working woman who has 15 minutes, one mirror, and no patience for extra steps.
Nine products. That's it.
The Face
1. A lightweight skin tint or tinted moisturizer
I'm not recommending a specific brand because formulations change and skin types vary, but here's what I look for: buildable coverage, SPF 30 minimum, and a finish that doesn't go greasy by 10 A.M.
For combination skin, I lean toward "natural matte" or "satin" finishes. Dewy looks great in photos but ages badly on a T-zone. Save dewy for weekends.
My current pick: Something with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide in the formula. Coverage is secondary to texture.

2. A concealer that covers and stays
This is the one product I don't compromise on. A bad foundation? Fine. You can blend it out. A bad concealer? You'll look tired all day.
I look for:
Crease-resistant formula (no one wants fine-line accentuation)
Medium-to-full coverage (buildable is a bonus)
A shade that matches my skin exactly (not lighter. Not darker. Exact.)
Pro tip: Apply under your eyes in a triangle, not a crescent. The triangle lifts. The crescent just sits there.
3. A powder that controls oil without looking dry
For combination/oily skin, powder is non-negotiable. But the wrong powder makes you look like you dipped your face in flour.
I use a translucent pressed powder applied only to my T-zone. Forehead, nose, chin. Everywhere else gets a light dusting if I'm feeling ambitious. Less is more. You can always add. You can't take away without starting over.
4. A cream blush that doubles as lip tint
This is the time-saving hack I use literally every morning.
A cream blush in a rosy or peach shade gives you color on your cheeks and your lips in one swipe. One finger, two spots, blended out with a brush or your hand. Done.
Why cream over powder? It melts into your skin instead of sitting on top. And if you're late, it's faster to apply with your fingers than to find a brush.
The Eyes
5. A brow gel that holds shape
This is the biggest "instant polish" product on the list. Tinted or clear, doesn't matter.
What matters: it holds your brow shape all day, adds a tiny bit of definition, and takes about 12 seconds to apply. More time than that and you're overcomplicating it.
6. A mascara that doesn't flake
I've tried mascaras that were gorgeous for the first hour and raccoon-ish by noon. Not worth it.
I look for:
Washable (tubing formulas are great if you want easy removal, but they flake if you rub your eyes)
Water-resistant (not waterproof, that's too hard to remove)
A brush that separates, not clumps
One coat. Two if I need to look especially awake. That's it.
7. One neutral eyeshadow stick
This is my cheat for "eyes that look done" without doing anything.
A shimmer or satin stick in bronze, taupe, or champagne. Sweep it across your lid with your finger, blend the edge with the other end, and you have a one-shadow look that reads as effortful.
The Finishing Details
8. A setting spray that actually works
Setting spray is not optional if you have a commute. It's the difference between your makeup arriving at work and your makeup surrendering at the train platform.
I use a matte-setting spray with a fine mist. Spray in a T and then an X across your face. That's the technique. It works.
9. A lip product that stains, not sits
Lipstick that transfers everywhere isn't useful. A gloss that disappears after coffee isn't useful.
I keep a tinted lip balm with a staining element in my bag. It leaves color behind even when the balm wears off. Two applications a day, max, and my lips look like I care without me having to actually care.
What's Not in the Bag
Primer (I use moisturizer as primer, and I've never regretted it)
Foundation (too heavy, too much work)
Eyeliner (I'm not coordinated enough at 7 A.M.)
False lashes (are you kidding me)
Highlighter (my natural oils are already doing this, thanks)
Bronzer (I'd rather add a second layer of blush)
The Getting-Ready Flow

Moisturizer (1 minute)
Skin tint (2 minutes, fingers or damp sponge)
Concealer (2 minutes, triangle method, pat with ring finger)
Powder T-zone (1 minute)
Brow gel (30 seconds)
Mascara (1 minute)
Shadow stick across lid (1 minute)
Cream blush on cheeks, lips (2 minutes)
Setting spray (30 seconds)
Total: 11 minutes. The extra 4 minutes are for deciding what to wear.
The Bottom Line
You don't need a collection. You need a system.
Nine products, one bag, 15 minutes. That's enough to look polished, professional, and like you didn't try too hard.
Because you didn't. You were just efficient.
